What are Special Ballots and What Should I Know About Them?
Special Ballots are ballots sent out to electors on the Permanent Electors Register who request them because they are unable to vote at an Advance Vote or at a voting station on Election Day.
If you are unsure if you are on the Permanent Electors Registration list, call 403-603-6203, and the returning office can look you up.
- If you are not registered to vote, and the registration period has ended (September 15, 2025), you can apply to be added to the Permanent Elector Register by completing Form 13 Elector Register (page 1) and submitting that form and the required identification along with the Request for Special Ballot Package. Form 13 is included in the Request for Special Ballot Package.
Requesting a Special Ballot Package:
If you would like to vote by Special Ballot, please complete and return the Request for Special Ballot Package forms. You may return your completed Request for Special Ballot Package forms to the Returning Officer by:
- delivering it to the Foothills County Administrative Office (open 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, excluding holidays).
- mailing it to Box 5605, High River, AB T1V 1M7, or
- emailing it to the Returning Officer.
Special Ballot Packages will either be mailed to electors or scheduled for pick up from the Town Office during regular business hours. The Returning Officer will not courier special ballot packages to voters at the expense of the Town. If any voter wishes to arrange for courier pickup, they may do so by their own arrangement and at their own expense.
Municipal Affairs has created a video to assist voters in obtaining and submitting special ballots under these new rules. It is strongly recommended that you watch the video before making your application.
Completed Special Ballot Packages can be mailed or couriered to the Returning Officer or dropped off at the County Administrative Office during regular business hours. An employee at the County Office must receive Special Ballot Packages; they CANNOT be placed in the exterior drop boxes, as this will result in the ballots being rejected, in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act, section 77.21(1).
Special ballots must be received by Friday, October 14, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.
