BACKYARD HENS ON PARCELS UNDER 3 ACRES IN FOOTHILLS COUNTY
WHAT WE HEARD AND HOW WE ARE PROCEEDING
June 10, 2020 subsequent to a public hearing, Bylaw 32/2020 was passed for Land Use Bylaw amendments including those allowing for Backyard Hens on parcel under 3 acres in size outside of Hamlet boundaries in Foothills County.
LAND USE BYLAW AMENDEMNTS
Further to the public hearing that was held May 27, 2020, Council requested the minimum age restriction on the backyard hens be removed and increased the number of hens to a maximum of 10 (ten) hens per parcel. These changes were incorporated into the bylaw prior to third reading.
You are encouraged to obtain some level of training on small flock ownership when considering the keeping of hens on your property. The Alberta government has published a guide for small flock owners and operations should be conducted in accordance with these regulations and the Land Use Bylaw.
Consideration of backyard hens on parcels less than 3 acres in size in Foothills County required amendments to the Land Use Bylaw.
Council then directed staff to engage County residents for feedback in order to obtain a representative perspective on the matter. In November 2019, the County launched the Backyard Hen Online Survey, along with information on the subject. The online survey was made available November 1, 2019 and remained open for the entire month of November, giving residents one month to provide their opinion, suggestions, and additional feedback on accommodating backyard hens on parcels under 3 acres in size in Foothills County.
WHAT WE HEARD
Approximately 164 residents responded to the online survey. 30% of those respondents live in Hamlets in Foothills County.

The direction provided was to phase the project, allowing for backyard hens on parcels under 3 acres in size outside of the Hamlet boundaries as Phase I to proceed at this time.
