Freedom of Information & Privacy

Election and Information Services

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act, in Alberta, aims to strike a balance between the public's right to know and the individual's right to privacy, as those rights relate to information held by public bodies.

This law was proclaimed October 1, 1995, and now affects all provincial government departments, agencies, boards and commissions, school boards, health care bodies, post-secondary educational institutions, and local government.

The Alberta legislation can be found at Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

The FOIP Act provides that Albertans have

  • The right to request access to information held by Foothills County,
  • The right to access personal information about themselves held by Foothills County,
  • The right to request correction to their personal information held by Foothills County,
  • Controls on the collection, use and disclosure of personal information, by Foothills County.
  • The right to request independent review of decisions made under FOIP.

You can access many public body records without making a request under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the FOIP Act). To determine whether you need to make a request under the Act or if you need help completing the form, contact the FOIP Coordinator of the public body to which you are making the request.

For more information, contact Sherri Barrett at 403-652-6227 or email.
